Manhattan Penthouse
​

This Manhattan penthouse was designed for two artists. It was originally built in the 1920's as an addition to the existing brick apartment building to house the workers. The 800 square foot structure was redesigned by HoldenArch into a one bedroom residence with a large living/dining room, one bedroom, kitchen and bath.  The design incorporates a large terrace on two sides with views of the Empire State Building.

East Hampton Artists Studio
 
​This project was created for two artists in East Hampton, New York. It consists of a new two-story building that is connected to the existing house via a second story wood and glass bridge. Each 600 SF studio was designed to accommodate the specific needs of each artist. The climate controlled basement houses storage of paintings and other artworks.
 
 
Manhattan Apartment
 
Located on the Upper East side of Manhattan, this 1930's traditional, two bedroom apartment was completely redesigned and renovated for a doctor and her partner. The apartment is now open to the dining and living room area and the bathrooms were expanded and moderized. All of the electrical and plumbing was replaced and the original steel French windows in the front of the apartment were restored.  
 
 

 

 

Long Island Residence​
 
Working as a team with the artist/owner of the property, we designed this two story house with large open spaces for summer living and an environmentally sustainable structure. The large deck at the rear of the house is entered from the living room through large custom doors with full opening screens that retract into the walls. A small gazebo at the end of the deck allows for a private outdoor reading room for the owners.
Bridgehampton Barn Residence​
 
This original 8,000 square foot potato barn in Eastern Long Island, is designed to be half house and half studio. The barn interior is left in it's original configuration with a drive in garage and open ceilings. The residential half of the house utilizes its very tall ceiling height to incorporate several bedrooms connected by open walkways, allowing views to the ground floor.

 

 

Montauk Residence​
 
Sited high up on a bluff, this 5,000 square foot residence was designed and built for a couple moving from the city to the eastern end of Long Island. Incorporating the original cottage, and expanding the footprint allowed for a two story structure with views to the ocean. The plan was conceived to maximize privacy. Guest quarters, master suite and outdoor activities are all separated with a common living room dining room, family area in the center. The upper deck is over the dining area with its drainage passing through interior columns.

 

 

Sag Harbor Residence
 
Designed for his family, architect Barry Holden added 1,600 square feet to an existing small stucco cottage located on the waterfront in Eastern Long Island, New York. The house ceiling heights were raised substantially to create a wide second floor view of the bay. The unique stairs were designed with artist Nina Yankowitz and are cantilevered 14 inches past the wall below. The steel railing was custom designed and created by a local artisan. Holden created a unique design for the roof using a combination of pre- fabricated insulated panels and grooved plywood allowing for an exposed beam ceiling in the style of long island cottages. 

 

 

North Fork Residence
 
Originally built as a coast guard barracks on the North Fork of long Island, NY, then in the 1940's taken over by the abstract expressionist, Theodore Stamos, for his studio, this cement block building has a long history. The current owners purchased the property from another well known artist, Kez Zapkas,  and in 2015. HoldenArch redesigned the conglomerate of artist studio buildings into a modern residence without sacrificing their original architectural integrity. 
Loft Residence Lower Manhattan
 
The original building was designed as an office building in the early part of the 20th Century in the Financial District of Manhattan.The building was developed into residential apartments in 2005. The owners are a retired couple. We decided to gut renovate the existing apartment and design a new one bedroom loft apartment with large open spaces and a modern industrial design. 

 

 

Artist Country House and Studio
 
 
Painter Tim Linn and his family moved into their new house just six months before Tim passed away. Tim and I had been friends for over forty years. It was my honor to have worked with Tim to design his family's house and studio located in upstate New York. The design incorporated two 30X30 foot square buildings, one the house and the other the studio. A shed roof connected the two structures with a 12 foot wide deck between them. The complex is heated by a deep well heat pump supplying radiant floors. The roofing and siding materials are steel.
